There’s a story – or more precisely a narrative vignette – about this review of 80 Days, which at surface is a pretty explicable quantity: a steampunk-accented combination of interactive fiction, Ticket to Ride and Where in the World is Carmen You don’t need a massive stage or cast to tell a sprawling story in the theater — not if you’ve got some ingenuity and nimble actors. Happily, the high-spirited and cheeky new take on Jules Verne’s action-adventure classic, “Around the World in Daydreaming about that round-the-world trip you’ve been planning for years? Covering over fifty countries and seven continents, Google Street View allows you to embark on the journey from the comfort of your own desk, no passport necessary. “Around the World in 80 Days” is directed with a pure sense of fun by Travis W. Walter, MBT artistic director. “The thought that the power of steam could do almost anything is inspired by the machinery of the 19th century and authors like Jules Verne As have all versions of Around the World, this one starts with a wager. Fogg bets his career against that of the head of the British Royal Academy of Science. If he can circumnavigate the globe in eighty days, he will take over as head of the Royal Academy. You could make a zany night of "Around the World in 80 Days," Mark Brown's action-packed reduction of the Jules Verne novel, and the Round House Theatre production certainly indulges in its share of pratfalls and spit-takes. Yet director Nick Olcott's But Elizabeth Bisland? Never heard the name. Let alone that she took the challenge to race Bly around the world. In 80 days. And alone, no less. But they did. And in Victorian times when women rarely went to the store alone, let alone to Ceylon. .
